Water-Cooled Cable for Induction Furnace: What Information Should Buyers Provide?

Many purchasing inquiries for induction-furnace water-cooled cables start with only a furnace capacity, such as 500 kg, 1 ton, 3 tons or 10 tons. Furnace capacity is useful, but it is not enough information to manufacture a replacement cable accurately.

A furnace capacity alone is not a specification

The supplier normally needs the electrical and mechanical information that defines the actual installation.

Start with the operating frequency and current. Induction systems can operate at different frequencies, and flexible-lead design needs to account for frequency as well as current. Next, measure the cable length from terminal connection point to terminal connection point.

The terminal dimensions are equally important. Send clear photographs of both ends and, if possible, a drawing showing hole diameter, bolt-hole pattern, flange dimensions, terminal thickness and water connection.

Electrical, terminal, cooling and mechanical data

The cooling system should also be specified. Important information can include water inlet/outlet size, connection direction and the customer's required operating pressure or flow conditions.

Finally, describe the mechanical environment. Does the furnace tilt? Does the cable move repeatedly? Is the cable close to molten metal, furnace slag or a high-temperature area? Is a protective sleeve required?

A good RFQ can therefore contain:

  • Furnace type
  • Furnace capacity
  • Power supply rating
  • Operating frequency
  • Working current
  • Cable quantity
  • Cable length
  • Conductor cross-section
  • Terminal drawings/photos
  • Water connection
  • Installation environment
  • Required delivery quantity

If an old cable is available, photographs plus measurements are often the fastest starting point.
