Electrode Clamp, Conducting Arm & Clamping Ring

Water-cooled electrode clamping equipment for steelmaking electric arc furnaces, ladle refining furnaces and ferroalloy refining furnaces. Electrode diameters Ø300–Ø600 mm (Ø11.8–Ø23.6 in), currents from 7.7 kA to 70 kA, nine standard sizes.

The same parts, different names

Steel plants describe this equipment differently depending on where they are. If any of these terms match what you are sourcing, you are on the right page.

In North America

Electrode clamp, electrode holder, clamping head, contact shoe assembly; the arm is the current-conducting arm or copper-clad electrode arm. Electrode sizes are quoted in inches — 12", 14", 16", 20", 24" — and transformer current in kA.

In Europe

Electrode holder, electrode clamping ring, current-conducting electrode arm; Elektrodenhalter, Elektrodentragarm, bras porte-électrode. Electrode diameters in millimetres, currents in kA, arms usually described as copper-clad or copper-steel composite.

How we quote

Give us the electrode diameter in inches or millimetres, the transformer secondary current, and the furnace type. Drawings carry both units, and replacement parts are built to match the arm you already have.

EAF electrode clamp

The clamp holds the graphite electrode and passes the current into it. Disc springs provide the clamping force and the clamp releases pneumatically or hydraulically when the electrode is regulated or changed. Click any photo to enlarge.

Current-conducting electrode arm

For steelmaking electric arc furnaces, ladle refining furnaces and ferroalloy refining furnaces. Electrode diameter Ø300–Ø600 mm (Ø11.8–Ø23.6 in), current 7.7 kA to 70 kA, nine sizes in total.

Copper-steel clad construction

The arm is welded from copper-steel clad plate. The copper layer carries the current and the steel layer takes the mechanical loads, so one structure does both jobs — this is what North American plants call a current-conducting arm and European plants a copper-clad electrode arm.

Water jacket inside the frame

The arm frame contains a water jacket. With cooling water flowing, the arm withstands the flame and radiant heat coming off the furnace.

Disc spring clamping

Disc springs drive the clamping ring onto the electrode, giving a high and constant clamping force. Release is pneumatic or hydraulic, so the electrode is held reliably and let go quickly.

Chrome-copper clamp

The clamp itself is made from chrome-copper alloy or copper-steel clad plate, water cooled internally, which is what gives it a long service life under arc furnace conditions.

Electrode clamping ring

The ring is the part that actually grips the electrode. Same range: Ø300–Ø600 mm (Ø11.8–Ø23.6 in), 7.7–70 kA, nine sizes, chrome-copper alloy or copper-steel clad plate with internal water cooling.

Applications

Steelmaking EAF

Electrode clamps, arms and rings for AC electric arc furnaces in steel plants and foundries.

Ladle refining furnace

LF secondary metallurgy stations, where the same clamping equipment holds and feeds the electrodes.

Ferroalloy refining furnace

Submerged arc and refining furnaces producing ferroalloys, with the arm exposed to high radiant heat.

Replacement parts built to your furnace

Most of what we ship replaces equipment already in service. Send the drawing, the old part or photos with the main dimensions, and we manufacture a part that fits your existing arm, mast and regulation system.

Frequently asked questions

What does the electrode clamp do?
It grips the graphite electrode and passes the furnace current into it. Disc springs supply the clamping force; pneumatic or hydraulic pressure releases the clamp when the electrode is slipped or changed.
Why is the arm made of copper-steel clad plate?
Because it has to do two jobs at once. The copper layer carries the current, and the steel layer takes the mechanical loads from the electrode and the regulation system. Welding the two together as clad plate gives one structure that does both.
Is the arm water cooled?
Yes. There is a water jacket inside the arm frame. With water flowing, the arm withstands the flame and radiant heat from the furnace.
What material is the clamp?
Chrome-copper alloy or copper-steel clad plate, water cooled internally — this combination is what gives the clamp its service life.
Which electrode sizes do you cover?
Ø300 to Ø600 mm, roughly 12" to 24", across nine standard sizes, at currents from 7.7 kA to 70 kA.
Can you match our existing arm?
Yes. Send the drawing, the old part or photos with the main dimensions and we build a replacement that fits the arm, mast and regulation system you already have.
