Flexible Copper Connector

Laminated copper foil connectors and braided copper jumpers that join busbars to generators, transformers, switchgear and other heavy current equipment — absorbing movement, vibration and installation tolerance while carrying full load current.

One product, several names

Buyers call this part different things depending on the market, so if any of the terms below match what you are sourcing, you are on the right page.

In North America

Flexible copper shunt, laminated shunt, braided bonding jumper, flexible busbar connector, flex connector. Dimensions are usually quoted in inches, hole patterns in inch centres and stock sizes in AWG or MCM.

In Europe

Flexible busbar connector, laminated copper connector, copper braid connector, Stromschienenverbinder, tresse de cuivre. Dimensions in millimetres, hole centres in mm, cross sections in mm².

How we quote

Either way. Send inches or millimetres, a sketch, a photo of the old part or a drawing — we work to your units and confirm every dimension on the quotation drawing before production.

Laminated tinned copper foil connector

Copper foil flexible connectors are used mainly as the flexible link between busbars and generator sets, transformers and other large conductive equipment. Custom shapes and insulated versions are standard for us.

They are widely applied in metallurgy (aluminium, zinc and copper electrolysis), chemical plants (membrane caustic soda, electroplating), power transmission projects (power stations and substations), electrical equipment (transformers and switchgear), carbon plants, electric locomotives and marine vessels.

Characteristics

  • Carries heavy current with low resistance and long service life
  • High current capacity and good electrical performance
  • Quick and convenient to install
  • Improves conductivity and takes up installation tolerance between equipment
  • Provides movement compensation, and makes testing and maintenance easier
  • Keeps protecting the connection under demanding operating conditions

Process & specification

Pressure (diffusion) welding

The stacked copper foils are pressed together and joined by molecular diffusion welding, formed under high current heating. Copper foil thickness 0.05–0.30 mm (0.002–0.012 in).

Brazed type

The stacked copper foils are pressed together and brazed with a silver-based filler to a flat copper block. Copper foil thickness 0.05–0.30 mm (0.002–0.012 in).

Tinned braided copper connector

Braided copper connectors are made from high-quality copper braid, with seamless copper tube ferrules compressed onto both ends to form the contact faces. No additives are used in the compression process, and both the braid and the tube are T2 copper with matching conductivity and elongation.

Typical uses

  • Transformer earthing connections
  • Locomotive power systems
  • Mining flameproof switchgear
  • Generator sets
  • High-voltage electrical apparatus
  • Anywhere a flexible current path is needed

Current rating depends on the cross section, the duty cycle, the ambient temperature and how the connector is installed, so it is confirmed for your application rather than quoted from a fixed table.

Made to your drawing

Most connectors we ship are replacements or project parts built to a drawing, a sketch or an old sample. Shape, contact pad size, hole pattern, overall length, flexible length, insulation and plating are all open.

If you have no drawing, send photos of the existing part with the hole centres, the pad width and the overall length, and we prepare a manufacturing drawing for your approval.

Frequently asked questions

What is a flexible copper connector?
A flexible copper link between two rigid conductors. Laminated foil or braided copper carries the current while allowing the connected equipment to move, vibrate or expand without stressing the joint.
Foil or braid — which should I choose?
Laminated foil gives a flatter profile, a larger contact area and a defined bending plane, so it suits busbar-to-equipment links. Braid is more flexible in every direction and suits earthing straps, locomotive and switchgear connections. Send the application and we will suggest one.
What copper foil thickness do you use?
0.05 to 0.30 mm (0.002–0.012 in), stacked to the cross section required.
How are the contact pads joined?
Either by pressure diffusion welding under high current, or by silver-based brazing to a solid copper block. For braided connectors, a seamless copper tube ferrule is compressed onto the braid without any additive.
Can you work from inches?
Yes. Send dimensions in inches or millimetres; we convert and confirm every dimension on the drawing before production.
Can the connector be insulated?
Yes, with an insulating sleeve or coating over the flexible section, leaving the contact pads bare.
